Community Readiness for Cannabis Legalization

Join us Monday, March 3 at 6:30 in the Hiawatha Lodge for an informative session about Minnesota's newly implemented legalization of cannabis.

Session will cover a variety of topics including:
  • Overview of Minnesota's current legislation
  • Features of the legislation that allow for certain community influence
  • Identifying and implementing community safety guardrails

Community

The Pipestone Area Coalition works to coordinate community awareness and education about substance misuse.

We achieve this mission through:
• Listening to the community.
•  Public informational events.
• Providing educational tools to the community.
• Monitoring and affecting public policy
• Awareness campaigns.
• Partnerships with local resources, groups, and organizations.

Youth

A key focus of the Coalition is on substance misuse by the youth in our community. We work to provide information and resources to equip our youth to make more positive and healthy choices.

We achieve this mission through:
•  Educational curriculum and programming within the schools.
• Positive Community Norms campaigns that highlight the healthy choices the vast majority of our youth are making.
• Partnering with community resources to educate and inform youth about substance misuse.

Postive Community Norms

One key implementation strategy is to promote Positive Community Norms (PCN). PCN accentuates the positive behaviors and attitudes of the majority of our students. These can be more effective than “scare tactics” in reducing and preventing underage alcohol and other drug use. Our local research shows that most high school students choose NOT to drink alcohol in a typical month. This is the type of positive data our messaging conveys.
